Restaurant Flavor Beef and Broccoli – But Healthier!
If there’s one big OUT for 2026, it has to be accepting all the junk that’s added to our food.
Our food system is so out of control, it’s easy to feel like you have no alternatives. Flavor enhancers, dyes, seed oils, and GMO ingredients. The best way to ditch them? Know exactly what’s in your food by starting with whole foods at home.
Restaurants are the worst! They don’t have to publish an ingredient list, and their bottom line is a lot more important than your health.
Simple recipes like this Beef with Broccoli are such a life saver! Great take-out flavor, and a simple preparation, and nothing except clean, nutritious ingredients.
I suggest buying grass-fed beef and organic broccoli. The key to my simple but delicious cooking is always starting with quality ingredients.
This is as simple as marinating the beef, whisking together a stir fry sauce, and then cooking the beef and broccoli in the flavorful concoction!
One bite and you’ll happily skip the delivery next time you’re in the mood for Chinese food!

Beef and Broccoli Sauce (Soy Free, Paleo & Whole30)
- Coconut Aminos (a soy-free and gluten-free alternative to soy sauce. If this doesn’t need to be paleo or whole30, gluten free tamari is also an option.)
- Beef Broth
- Sesame Oil
- Arrowroot Powder
- Rice Vinegar (or white vinegar)
- Fresh Garlic
- Fresh Ginger

How to Make Healthy Beef and Broccoli
Step 1: Thinly slice beef against the grain. The thinner the beef is sliced, the faster it will cook (it also marinates faster and makes a very flavorful dish). Using a sharp knife helps cut meat evenly.
Step 2: Add sliced beef to a bowl, and mix it with the coconut aminos. Allow the beef to marinate while preparing the rest of the dish.

Step 3: In a measuring cup or small bowl, whisk together all the stir fry sauce ingredients.
Step 4: Add the broccoli to a large skillet with a lid, along with about 1/4 cup of water. Heat the water to a simmer over high heat, and cover the pan for about 3-5 minutes, to allow the broccoli to steam until crisp-tender. Remove the broccoli from the pan.

Step 5: Sprinkle the beef with 1 tablespoon of arrowroot, and toss to evenly coat it.
Step 6: Into the same pan, drizzle the olive oil, and then add the marinated beef. Heat the skillet to medium-high heat. Use a fork to spread the beef into an even layer so it cooks evenly. Cook each side for about 2-3 minutes, and then flip to cook the other side. Remove the beef from the pan.

Step 7: Add the stir-fry sauce to the pan. Heat it over medium-high heat, and bring the sauce to a simmer. Allow it to simmer for 2-3 minutes to thicken.
Step 8: Add the steamed broccoli and cooked beef back into the pan, and toss to coat in the sauce.

Step 9: Serve the beef and broccoli over rice, cauliflower rice, or other grain of choice. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions if desired.

How to Store Leftovers
Once the beef and broccoli has fully cooled, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
This healthy beef and broccoli recipe is amazing for meal prep! Pack it with rice or cauliflower rice for a complete meal, ready to go!
FAQ & Tips for the Best Beef with Broccoli
Is Beef and Broccoli healthy Chinese take out? Honestly, there really isn’t anything healthy coming out of a standard American Chinese restaurant. See oils, flavor enhancers like MSG, GMO corn based thickeners, added sugar, and low-quality ingredients are the standard. When you can, make your own dishes at home!
Is Chinese Beef and Broccoli keto friendly? From a restaurant, it is not! There is too much starch and often sugar added to the sauce. This version is keto-friendly, by cutting the quantities of arrowroot in half. If the carbs seem too high, remember the broccoli is high in fiber and the carbs are also in the sauce – and lots of the sauce will be left in the pan. Lessening the arrowroot will make the sauce thinner so even less sticks to the beef and broccoli.
What kind of steak is used for beef and broccoli? I use sirloin steak in this recipe, but sirloin tip, flank steak, or even round steak work in this dish. Tougher cuts of meat are okay to use but you might want to increase the marinating time.
What other veggies can I use in beef and broccoli? This dish is amazing because it’s so few ingredients, but if you love the sauce, use a variety of vegetables to mix it up! Broccolini, bell peppers, green beans, carrots, cauliflower, zucchini, and cabbage are great vegetables to add to a stir-fry.
Make it Low Sodium: If sodium is an issue for you, coconut aminos is lower in sodium than regular soy sauce. Omit the additional salt in the recipe. Low sodium soy sauce is another option.
Paleo & Whole30 Approved: As written, this recipe is paleo and Whole30 compliant. Coconut aminos and arrowroot are approved, but tamari or soy sauce and corn starch are not. While rice isn’t compliant, cauliflower rice is!
