Before you Turn on the Air Fryer
The first time I went to make air fryer baked potatoes, I chose big, beautiful russet potatoes. The result was a half cooked potato with an overly crispy (nearly burnt) exterior. I tried cooking them at a lower temperature, with a similar result.
Air fryer baked potatoes are best made with small to medium sized potatoes. The large ones take too long to bake through so this method isn’t appropriate.
Smaller potatoes come our amazing! Before putting them in the air fryer, I spray them with avocado oil, and then give them a good hefty sprinkle of Kosher salt. A coarser salt is the way to go for that steakhouse-style baked potato.
Once you’ve tried these, you’ll be hooked! You can bake a couple potatoes without heating up your whole oven, and they’ll be ready to go once your main course is prepped.
Things to Know:
- Small to medium sized potatoes work best. Larger potatoes don’t cook all the way through. If you only have larger potatoes, cut them in half.
- Coating the skins with avocado oil and Kosher salt gives them the steakhouse-style crispy skin, and prevents the skins from drying out.
- They take 40 minutes, so plan the rest of your meal accordingly! Get these in the air fryer before starting other dinner preparations.

How to Cook Potatoes in an Air Fryer
Step 1: Preheat the air fryer to 390º F for about 5 minutes while preparing your potatoes.
Cut the ends off the potatoes, and pierce the skins in a few place. Spray or brush the potatoes with avocado oil, and then sprinkle them (generously!) with kosher salt.
Step 2: Put the potatoes in the air fryer, and cook them for 35-45 minutes, depending on the size of your potatoes. You’ll know they are done when the skins are super crispy, and they are soft when pierced with a fork. I did not find it necessary to flip the potatoes half way through the cooking time. They air circulates all around the potatoes so they were evenly cooked and crispy all around.

Tips for Baking Potatoes in an Air Fryer
- Scrubbing the potatoes, cutting off the ends, and poking them ensures your potatoes will have a clean, delicious skin to eat and stops them from building up pressure in the air fryer.
- Don’t skip the oil/salt coating on the outside of the potato. It keeps the potato skin moist and helps it crisp up.
- Use uniform sized potatoes, so they cook evenly.
- Reheat Potatoes: Cut the potatoes in half and put them back in the air fryer at 390º for about 8 minutes.
