My Favorite Gluten Free Apple Pie
Let’s celebrate the holidays with a delicious apple pie – make my slice a healthy Gluten Free Apple Pie!
Whether you’re searching for a gluten free apple pie because of a gluten intolerance, or simply want a dessert with more nutrition, you’ve found a great option!
I start with a flakey, Almond Flour Pie Crust. This crust looks and tastes so similar to a regular wheat crust! Almond flour burns faster than wheat flour, and doesn’t hold together well, so there are a few tricks I use to make it easier to work with.
1). I keep the crust chilled during the process, starting with frozen butter. This allows the crust to go into the pie plate without falling apart.
2). I precook the apple filling, and then bake the pie for a short time to bring it all together. Precooking the filling means the apples get soft and saucy, without over baking the crust.
Don’t be afraid of this pie! While requiring a different process, it doesn’t take more time to make than a standard pie. And the result is incredible!
A low sugar, paleo apple pie, with a buttery, crumble topping that’s a stunning dessert to serve for holidays!
And if you decide to eat the leftovers for breakfast (with a scoop of Greek yogurt), no judgement!
What You’ll Need
Gluten Free Apple Pie Crust
- Almond Flour Pie Crust (almond flour, butter, coconut flour, sea salt, egg white, and honey)
- Another gluten free pie crust you know and love!
Healthy Apple Pie Filling
- Apples – (honey crisp, pink lady, Gravenstein, Cortland, Granny Smith, or Braeburn)
- Coconut Oil (the apples are sautéed in coconut oil prior to filling the gluten free pie crust, to prevent the crust from over browning)
- Maple Syrup (can sub coconut sugar or brown sugar)
- Lemon Juice (this is a great balance to keep the flavors sweet-tart)
- Arrowroot (or another thickener, like organic corn starch or tapioca flour)
- Cinnamon (add nutmeg as well, if you love it!)
- Sea Salt
Optional: Crumble Topping
- Almond Flour (or use gluten free oats for an oatmeal crumble topping)
- Walnuts (or use almonds or pecans)
- Butter (coconut oil works here also)
- Cinnamon
- Sea Salt
- Maple Syrup (can use coconut sugar or brown sugar)
How to Make a Gluten Free Apple Pie
Step 1: Start with rolling out your gluten free pie crust in a 9 inch pie plate. I use this Almond Flour Pie Crust to keep the pie gluten free and paleo.
Step 2: If using the Almond Flour Pie Crust, preheat oven to 325º F. Place a pie shield around the crust. A strip of foil wrapped around the edges of the pie will also help prevent the crust from over browning. For best results, I recommend using a pie shield. Pre bake the crust for 10 minutes prior to adding the apple filling.
Step 3: Make the crumble topping, if using. Add the almond flour (or oats) and walnuts to a food processor bowl, along with butter and salt. Pulse to combine until the butter has broken down and formed a crumbly texture. Add the maple syrup, and pulse to bring the mixture together into a crumble. Set aside.
Step 4: Fill a large bowl with cold water and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Peel, core, and thinly slice apples. Add apple slices to lemon water to keep from browning while working.
Step 5: Drain the water from the apple slices. Heat a skillet over medium heat, and melt the coconut oil. Add the apple slices and maple syrup. Sauté the apple slices for 20-25 minutes, until they are very tender. The apples won’t cook long in the pie crust, so ensure they are fully softened.
Step 6: Remove the apples from heat. Add the arrowroot, lemon juice, cinnamon and salt, and stir to combine.
Step 6: Pour the apple mixture into the gluten free pie crust in an even layer.
Step 7: Top the apple pie filling with the crumble topping, if using.
Step 8: Cover the edges of the pie with a silicone pie shield. If you do not have one, use a strip of foil. Almond flour burns a lot faster than regular flour.
Step 9: Bake the pie for 30-35 minutes at 325º F. The apples will not bubble, like in a traditional pie recipe. The crust should start to brown. Watch the pie starting at 25 minutes and allow it to become golden, but pull the pie out of the oven before it over browns.
Step 10: Allow the pie to cool at least 30 minutes before cutting it into slices. Serve a’la mode, with vanilla ice cream!
Tips for a Perfect Paleo Apple Pie
Keep this pie Paleo: This pie has the option of an oatmeal crumble topping, or a paleo walnut topping. It calls for maple syrup as a sweetener, so is a paleo apple pie!
Vegan Gluten Free Apple Pie: The only ingredient that needs to be swapped in this recipe to make it vegan is to substitute a vegan butter spread in place of butter.
