Tropical Smoothie Avocolada Smoothie Remake
I love remaking my favorite drinks at home. Often they are more delicious, and they ALWAYS save a lot of money.
Two of my fav copycat recipes are my Healthy Orange Julius Smoothie and Cold Brew Coffee.
Tropical Smoothie Cafe has a drink called an Avocolada — like it sounds, a dreamy pairing of creamy avocado coconut milk. It’s a burst of tropical flavor with lots of nutrient dense ingredients blended in.
Think the flavor of a piña colada, with vibrant green undertones.
My freezer looks like a smoothie bar. I always have frozen greens, bananas, berries, and often pineapple and mango. When I need a quick meal or if I am running out of fresh produce, I have healthy meals at the tips of my fingers.
Coconut water, coconut milk, and lime juice are pantry staples.
My tip for never wasting avocados? When using half of an avocado to top a meal, I cut the other half in quarters and toss it in the freezer. No more browning avocados in my produce drawer!
What You’ll Need
- Frozen Avocados (only using half an avocado? Cut the other half in quarters and freeze for this smoothie! Be sure to start with a ripe avocado for maximum creaminess.)
- Frozen Pineapple
- Spinach (fresh or frozen)
- Kale (fresh or frozen)
- Lime Juice
- Coconut Milk (or a little coconut cream)
- Coconut Water (this makes the smoothie refreshingly light and adds electrolytes! Plus, it has less sugar than the juices often used in smoothies.)
- Optional: Honey, agave nectar, monk fruit sweetener, or 1/2 a frozen banana. Depending on the sweetness of the pineapple, this drink is greens heavy. Add a pop of sweetness based on preference!
How to Make an Avocolada Smoothie at Home
*Plan ahead to make this smoothie by having frozen pineapple and avocado in your freezer. I often keep spinach and kale in the freezer as well, but you can use greens fresh or frozen in this smoothie.
Step 1: Add all smoothie ingredients to a blender.
Step 2: Process until very smooth and creamy, about 30-40 seconds. If desired, adjust sweetness by adding a little honey, monk fruit sweetener, or a chunk of frozen banana. Thin to desired consistency by adding more coconut water.
Green Smoothie Tips
Choosing Greens: This smoothie contains both kale and spinach. Spinach has almost no flavor when blended into a smoothie. Kale has a stronger “green” and earthy flavor. If you’re making this for little ones or you don’t really LOVE greens, choose to make this with spinach and omit the kale.
Smoothie Consistency: I love my smoothies so thick I need to eat them with a spoon. I freeze all my smoothie ingredients (except the liquids, like coconut water, coconut milk, and lime juice), and combine them for the thickest smoothie possible. If you prefer a thinner consistency, use more coconut water or coconut milk. You can also use fresh avocado to give his a thinner consistency.
Sweetness: The ingredients in this smoothie make a very lightly sweet smoothie. If you have a sweet pineapple, sweetener is not always necessary. If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, or your pineapple is less ripe, use a sweetener of choice. Honey, maple syrup, monk fruit sweetener, stevia drops, or even a chunk of frozen banana will all do the trick. Start with just a teaspoon or two and add more from there!
Make this your own Smoothie Recipe: If you love the idea of an avocado smoothie, but don’t love Pineapple, insert-favorite-fruit-here. Frozen mango, strawberries, or blueberries would make a great swap! Even just a frozen banana in place of the pineapple would be delicious.
