Easy Salmon Patties Recipe – made with canned salmon!
If you’re trying to add more Omega 3s to your diet, canned salmon is a game changer!
It’s more economical, easy to always have on hand, and so simple to prepare.
Canned salmon has small bones, but because of the processing, they are soft and safe to eat. These are high in calcium and something you normally wouldn’t consume eating fresh salmon. Canned salmon combined with a few fresh vegetables tastes amazing!
Many of us consume too many omega 6 fatty acids (found in seed oils, grains, and chicken), and not enough omega 3 fatty acids (seafood, walnuts, flax seeds, and grass-fed beef). Add canned salmon patties to your weekly routine, and help balance out your omega 6-omega 3 ratio!
Skip the panko breadcrumbs – this recipe is naturally gluten free and low carb! And they still get plenty golden and lightly crisp around the edges.
You’ll LOVE this recipe because:
- Easily Gluten Free: This recipe uses nutritious almond flour instead of bread crumbs or saltine crackers. This ADDS nutrition instead of calories, and makes naturally gluten free fish patties.
- Ready in 15 Minutes: No preplanning required! Keep a can of salmon in your pantry – the other ingredients are things I typically have on hand (and you probably do too!)
- Versatile: Make these spicy, add different herbs, and serve in different ways. This recipe is so versatile I can make it every week.
- Meal Prep Perfection: Make extra salmon patties and FREEZE them for an even easier dinner later on!
What You’ll Need
- Canned Salmon (or use 8 ounces of cooked fresh salmon – this is great for leftovers!)
- Large Egg
- Almond Flour
- Onion (red or yellow onion works here!)
- Parsley (or cilantro, dill, or chopped green onions)
- Fresh Lemon Juice
- Jalapeño or Green Bell Pepper (I like mine with a little spice!)
- Sea Salt and Black Pepper
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil (or avocado oil, for frying)
- Even more flavor?! Add about 1/2 teaspoon of Old Bay Seasoning or Cajun Seasoning for extra flavorful patties.

How to Make Canned Salmon Patties
Step 1: Drain both cans of salmon. Add all ingredients into a food processor bowl. Pulse until the ingredients are well incorporated, but do not process too long or the ingredients will be become more like a paste.
Step 2: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Drizzle in olive oil. Using a 1/3 cup measuring cup or scoop, press the salmon mixture to form patties. Add patties into the hot oil. Cook the salmon patties for 4-5 minutes, until deeply golden brown with crisp edges. Flip, and continue to cook the other side for another 4-5 minutes. Repeat until all the salmon mixture has been cooked into patties.
Pro Tip: I like to cook about 1 tablespoon of the mixture in the skillet first before forming patties. Taste it and adjust the seasonings to your preference before cooking all of them!

Step 3: Serve hot over fresh greens with whatever sauces you love!

How to Store Leftovers + Reheating Tips
Once the salmon patties have fully cooled, place in an airtight container, and refrigerate for 2-3 days.
To Freeze: These freeze wonderfully! Add to an airtight storage container, and freeze up to 3 months. Allow to thaw in the refrigerator for a couple of hour or at room temperature for 30 minutes prior to reheating.
To Reheat Leftover Salmon Patties: Add thawed salmon patties back into a skillet with olive oil or medium heat. Allow to cook for 3-4 minutes, then flip and continue to cook on the other side, until hot throughout.
Alternately, preheat oven to 400º F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper, and add the salmon patties. Bake for about 10 minutes or until hot throughout.
How to Serve Salmon Patties
Salmon patties are traditionally served with lemon wedges and tartar sauce or something similar. To make a quick, high-protein (healthy!) tartar sauce, combine:
Greek Yogurt Tartar Sauce
- 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
- 2 tablespoons avocado oil mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup dill pickle, chopped finely
- 1 teaspoon dill (or 2 tablespoons fresh dill)
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder or dried minced onion
- salt and black pepper, to taste
Serve over Greens
My favorite quick meal is to make an arugula salad (use whatever greens you have!) with some mashed avocado on top. Add cherry tomatoes, thinly sliced red onion, olives, or sliced bell peppers, if desired. Drizzle with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and lemon juice.
As Salmon Burgers
Make these bigger (divide into 2-3 large cakes) and add to a bun or gluten free bun, along with tartar sauce, dijon mustard, lettuce, tomato, a little onion, and pickle, for a simple salmon burger! Drizzle with a simple dill sauce.
