Enjoy this Gluten Free Apple Crisp year round! I use Honey Crisp apples to prep a low sugar (but perfectly sweet-tart!) apple filling, then topped it with an oatmeal and pecan crumble topping. The perfect holiday dessert (or make it any night of the week!).

A Beautiful & Simple Fall Dessert
Fruit crisps are my favorite dessert to prepare for holidays and dinner parties. Simple to prepare, and everyone loves them.
I also love that by choosing fresh, in-season fruit, less sugar is required. Baking fruit brings out the natural sweetness, which is complemented perfectly with a drizzle of natural sweetener – honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar are my favorites.
I love thick oatmeal crisp toppings. It’s like serving a crumbled cookie on top of warm fruit!
This apple crisp doubles as breakfast – I serve the leftovers with Greek yogurt!
What You’ll Need
- Apples (I use honey crisp, but pink lady, Gravenstein, and Cortand, or Braeburn are good swaps!)
- Maple Syrup (substitute a monk fruit sweetener for a sugar free apple crisp, or use coconut sugar)
- Lemon Juice (brings out the tart flavor!)
- Arrowroot Powder (tapioca powder is a good alternative!)
- Cinnamon
- Sea Salt
Gluten Free Crumble Topping
- Gluten Free Oats (whatever whole rolled oats work for you, but I love these sprouted oats from One Degree that are glyphosate free!)
- Honey
- Pecans
- Melted Butter
- Cinnamon
- Sea Salt
What kind of apples are best for apple crisp?
The best apples to bake with are firmer varieties that have a tart flavor. This allows them to keep their structure and gives the desserts a sweet-tart taste.
My go-to apples for baking are Honey Crisp apples and Pink Lady apples.
Other varieties that work well in this gluten free apple crisp recipe are Jonagolds, granny smiths, Braeburn, and Cortland. Buy the apples you can get locally for the freshest apple desserts possible!
How to Make Apple Crisp
Step 1: Core and then thinly slice the apples. Peel the apples if you prefer them that way. Add them to an 8×8 baking dish.
Step 2: Drizzle the apples with lemon juice and maple syrup, then sprinkle with arrowroot, cinnamon, and salt. Toss the apples to evenly coat them.
Step 3: In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the oats, oat flour (if you don’t have oat flour, use rolled oats blended until a flour forms), pecans, cinnamon, and salt. Mix together to combine.
Step 4: Add maple syrup and melted butter to the topping ingredients, and stir together until coated.
Step 5: Top the apples with the crisp topping.
Step 6: Cover the apple crisp with foil, and bake at 350º F for 45 minutes. Remove the foil, and bake for an additional 20 minutes until the apple filling is bubbling and the crisp topping is browned.
Variations on a Gluten Free Apple Crisp
Sugar Free Apple Crisp
This recipe can be made sugar free by swapping out the maple syrup in both the apple filling and the crumble topping with monk fruit sweetener.
I use this Monk Fruit Sweetener and my family can’t tell I am making sugar free desserts!
Nut Free Apple Crisp
No pecans? No problem! You can omit the nuts in the recipe and still have a delicious Gluten Free apple dessert! If you’d like, add 1/3 cup of unsweetened, shredded coconut into the oatmeal crumble.
Vegan Apple Crisp
Use a vegan butter in the crumble topping, or try melted coconut oil in its place.
